The Sailent Points and Highlights of the 173 Pages Admission Policy Guidelines Presented by Jamb on June 26th 2018
(1) The time frame for the 2018/2019 admissions has been fixed to commence from 2nd July 2018 and close on 16th November 2018
The implication of this is that any candidate who could not confirm his or her admission status on or before November 16th 2018 should begin to prepare to write another jamb
But in 2016, the deadline was fixed for November 30th.. the admissions of that year later dragged into 2017
In 2017, Jamb fixed a deadline of November and later extended to January 2018.. but the admissions later dragged up to March
If the schools will eventually comply with the November deadline, only time will tell especially now that jamb has vowed to ensure strict compliance
All schools are expected to start advertising their post utme and screening notifications from 2nd July downwards
(2) The report was silent on admission cut off mark which implies eventually that the statusquo remains as it were last year
But schools will always set their cut off marks based on their own peculiarities and according to demand and supply
Most of the schools will reveal their cut off marks as soon as they announce their screening
(3) The major parameters for admitting candidates remain that of Merit, catchment, Elds and Quota systems
These parameters are expected to give the candidates a level playing field and equal chances
But the jamb scores, the o'level results and candidates screening scores are also very important determinats
Jamb insisted that all awaiting results must be uploaded and updated as soon as the results are released.. without which the candidates will not be considered for admissions at all
(4) We now understand why all the candidates who sit for jamb exam every year do not all get admitted. The reasons are as follows
S= suitable candidates, Q= qualified candidates, R= rigid candidates, nS= not suitable candidates, nA= not admitted candidates, A= admitted candidates
According to Jamb, out of the 1.3million candidates that wrote jamb in 2017, only about 566 thousand got admitted at the end of the day. See the analysis below
About 41% of S+Q=A (41% were suitable and qualified and therefore got admitted)
About 30% were Q but nS (30% were qualified but not suitable) due majorly to wrong utme subject combination in relation to the course chosen by the candidates
About 10% were Q+S but R (10% were qualified and suitable but rigid) these are candidates who chose big and competitive courses but are not willing to change to other lower courses.. and when the departments get filled up, they remain stranded
About 19% were Q+S but nA (19% were qualified and suitable but not admitted) this may be when the schools have admitted up to their maximum capacity and stop admitting
(5) All the schools have been mandated to collect only #2,000 as post utme or screening charge.. but only time will tell if the schools will actually abide by this
(6) Writing of exam as post utme or screening method was not really stressed but all the candidates are strictly advised to prepare for exams. Any school that decides not to conduct exam.. so be it
(7) The CAPS system is to be retained for total quality management and for transparency in the whole exercise
Questions will be entertained here from areas that are not clear for further explanation.
